Tremiti Islands - Isole Tremiti, Italy

Five tiny islands, two of them inhabitated,  lying north of the Garganto (the "spur" of Italy), form the Tremiti Archipelago.
View from the main island San Domino over to San Nicola with the once mighty benedictine monastery Santa Maria di Tremiti. The island to the left, Cretaccio, is uninhabitated.

A sandy beach and turqoise sea below the steep cliffs of San Domino, biggest of the Tremiti Islands, Italy.

San Nicolas, part of the Tremiti archipelago, seen from the neighbouring island San Domino, with a rainbow appearing.

Sta. Maria di Tremiti was a benedictine monastery, built like a mighty fortress, on the small island of San Nicola. Founded 1005 (or as early as the 8th century), it was changed to a penal colony in 1783.
