The "Silver Creek Valley" forms the natural boundary between the Teutoburger Wald and the Eggegebirge, two hill ranges in Northern Germany. On the northern side of the Velmerstot - the highest peak of the Eggegebirge, it has formed a gorge with steep sandstone cliffs. Small waterfalls, mossy rocks, and a forest that in part is allowed natural growth again, forms a place of outstanding beauty.

I took time to visit the Edersee/Kellerwald region again. The ancient gnarly oaks in fall colors were amazing. Some other images were taken in the Eggegebirge hills. More to come!

Gnarly trees - Knorreichen

All images of this album were taken in Spring 2011, in the Regions "Knorreichenstieg" ("Gnarly Oaks Trail") and "Lindenberg" ("Linden Mountain") of the Natural Preserve Kellerwald-Edersee in Hesse, Germany. On the southern side of the artificial Edersee lake, the beech forests of the Kellerwald only recently have become an UNESCO natural heritage site. On the south facing, steep slopes on the northern side of the lake one finds a very different kind of forest. The slowly sliding, hot and very dry graywacke slopes pose a difficult environment - on which rests of primeval oak forests persisted. Due to the extreme environment, many trees grew in bizarre scapes.

To document these trees and the landscape they grow in is my current project.

It was not mainly the aspect of ecology and environmentalism that attracted me, but a more romantic one. Bizarre natural shapes have always inspired human fantasies. Ovid, in his "Metamorphoses", tells about transformations into rocks and trees. Alll over our planet, in mythologies and fairytales, trees are associated with gods or natural spirits.
Expecially bizarre trees are perceived as individuals; some see humans, animals or otherworldly beings in them.


Many also experience a positive identification with certain aspects associated with trees and forests - strength, tranquility, endurance, survival, security, and beauty.

As a visually orientated person I can't evade the topos of trees and forests. My goal is to participate in their protection and preservation, my method is the enchanted vision.

Alle Fotos dieses Projekts sind in im Frühjahr 2011 in den Bereichen „Knorreichenstieg“ und „Lindenberg“ des Naturparks Kellerwald-Edersee entstanden. Auf der Südseite des Edersees erstreckt sich der Nationalpark „Kellerwald“, seine Buchenwälder sind seit kurzem UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe. An den südwärts weisenden Steilhängen der Nordseite finden sich ganz andersartige Wälder. Auf den sehr trockenen, rutschenden Blockhalden aus Grauwacke überlebten Reste von Eichenurwäldern; bedingt durch die extremen Verhältnisse wuchsen die Bäume zu bizarren Formen.
Diese Bäume und die dazugehörige Landschaft zu porträtieren ist mein aktuelles Projekt.
Nicht der ökologisch-naturschützerische Aspekt hat mich in erster Linie angezogen, sondern ein eher romantischer. Bizarre Naturgebilde haben schon immer die Phantasie der Menschen angeregt – Ovids Metamorphosen berichten von Verwandlungen in Bäume und Felsen, weltweit werden in Mythen und Märchen Bäume mit Göttern und Naturwesen assoziiert.

Besonders eigenwillig gewachsene Bäume werden oft als Individuen wahrgenommen, Manche sehen Gestalten, Tiere und Sagenwesen in ihnen. Nicht zuletzt erfahren viele Menschen eine positive Identifizierung mit Eigenschaften von Bäumen und Wäldern – Stärke, Ausdauer, Überlebenswillen, Stille, Geborgenheit, Schönheit.
Als visuell orientierter Mensch kann ich mich dem Topos Wald und Bauim nicht entziehen. Mein Ziel ist, zum Weiterbestehen dieser Bäume und Wälder beizutragen, mein Mittel ist der verzauberte Blick.
